"Every strong tree was once a small plant and every great deed begins with a small, good thought" - Unknown

At WESTFJORD, we consider sustainability to be a fundamental value. We are aware that we bear responsibility for our planet and therefore focus on environmentally friendly materials and production processes. By making durable clothing and reducing our ecological footprint, we not only want to protect the environment, but also raise awareness of sustainability. We are convinced that sustainability is not only morally right, but also ensures the long-term success of our company.

WESTFJORD products made from recycled materials

We are gradually increasing the proportion of recycled materials in our products. Compared to conventional polyester, the manufacturing process is significantly more energy-efficient. In addition, recycling existing plastics reduces the need for crude oil and thus conserves important resources. The recycled materials we use are certified in accordance with the Global Recycling Standard. We work closely with our fabric suppliers to continuously increase the proportion of recycled materials in our products and thus conserve our resources.

Fluorine-free impregnation with BIONIC-FINISH® ECO

We avoid fluorine-based impregnations in our products and have been using the Rudolf Group's BIONIC-FINISH® ECO technology for all water-repellent and waterproof products since 2018. BIONIC-FINISH® ECO is based on a fluorine-free formula and uses a functional principle from nature: highly branched, hydrophobic polymers with structures that are branched like tree crowns align themselves in an orderly fashion on the textile. This achieves an optimal arrangement and anchoring on the fiber surface, which is highly effective and repels water as effectively as was previously only possible with fluorocarbon polymers. This makes BIONIC-FINISH® ECO an effective alternative to previous fluorine-based impregnations, whose effect on the environment and human health is still controversial. Trollkids products with BIONIC-FINISH® ECO are marked with a special label. The water-repellent function lasts for up to 20 wash cycles (30°C) and can be renewed with a wash-in impregnation.

Organic Cotton

Organic cotton, also known as ecological cotton, is grown using methods and materials that have a low impact on the environment. In contrast to conventional cotton cultivation, organic cotton cultivation does not use synthetic pesticides and fertilizers and instead relies on natural processes such as crop rotation and composting. This not only reduces the ecological footprint, but also promotes biodiversity and improves soil quality. In addition, organic cotton farming usually involves fair labor practices that ensure better working conditions for farmers and workers. Choosing products made from organic cotton is a sustainable decision that benefits both people and the environment.

GOTS certification

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is recognized as the world's leading standard for the processing of textiles made from natural fibres and covers the production, packaging, labelling, trade and distribution of all textiles made from at least 70 percent certified organic fibres. These fibers are grown according to the principles of organic farming, which means that no synthetic pesticides, insecticides, herbicides or genetic engineering are used in their production. In addition, GOTS also includes environmental and social criteria within the entire textile production and supply chain.

Certification according to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS)

All down used in our down products is certified in accordance with the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). This covers the entire down value chain and guarantees that no force-feeding or live plucking of waterfowl (goose, duck, etc.) takes place and that the supply chain is transparent and traceable. RDS is applicable to the entire global down industry from industrial supply chains to the collection of down in small rural areas. The audit and certification is carried out through annual visits to the sites to be certified.

Mulesing-free merino wool

We take great care to ensure that our merino wool only comes from suppliers who do not practice mulesing. We obtain the relevant certificates from our suppliers to confirm this. Mulesing is a method designed to minimize the risk of fly maggot infestation on the hindquarters of sheep. This area of the body is particularly susceptible due to the folds of skin there. During mulesing, the wrinkled skin is cut off without anaesthetic, which is extremely painful for the sheep.

Laboratory tests for pollutants

To ensure compliance with all legal regulations and to be certain that our products do not contain any health-relevant parameters, we have them tested at regular intervals by independent laboratories and testing institutes such as the Bremen Environmental Institute, TÜV Rheinland or SGS.

Atmosfair compensation for travel / flights

Environmentally conscious people have the option of offsetting CO2 emissions by making appropriate payments to the non-profit climate protection organization atmosfair GmbH. atmosfair uses the money to finance climate protection projects. These not only save CO2, but also promote sustainable development through technology transfer and poverty reduction. Since 2019, Trollkids has been offsetting greenhouse gases caused by unavoidable intercontinental flights by making payments to atmosfair. The same applies to distances traveled by car. However, we only use the car when we are presenting our collections to retailers and need to transport our products, which is not so easy on public transport. Apart from that, we don't fly within Germany and Europe as a matter of principle, but travel by train.
